Dress code casual elegance. You can have an amazing time anywhere. I have been to lots of resorts I have been on cruises. I have been to Europe and stayed in a place the size of a closet and enjoyed every min. This resort had a jungle feel, very beautiful. I have been to one like it in Mexico. The rooms were simple and perfect as far as I was concerned.
Yes, I have stayed in fancier ones, but I liked this one. The food was good, some places better than others but good. The drive there was nice, I enjoyed seeing the area and the driver was great. I want to say that maybe if the tipping policy was changed the attitudes would be better.
We are a necessary evil, I get that. If am paying for it I don't like to be treated that way. There were a few staff that were friendly but most were not.
Yes, I tipped to try to help with attitudes. The beach was very pretty and the vendors did not bother me. They were friendly, you knew going in they would scam you if you were not careful and I found watching them entertaining. Plus they were friendly, and a simple no thank you and they moved on. If I did not tip and ask for a shot on the side to pour in my drink it was always light if none existant. Highsight, i should have walked the beach and found a sealed bottle of somthing.
The really bad, the first morning I went to breakfast and we walked in the wrong entrance, very few people there. We sat down and waited while they gave us dirty looks and walked by us. Finally they came to the table and scolded us for entering the wrong way.
We apologized and said it would not happen again. The young man look at me like I was the devil. The order was messed up, I just ate what came. The next really bad: I walk up to a restaurant bar and stood there while people ignored me. Finally I was waited on I ask for more rum, my standard to have a normal drink and she taunted me by putting a splash.
I left the drink on the counter. Next, we had a private catamaran scheduled. It was pouring so i understood why they didn't want to go but no one came and told us we waited for over an hour. Then the next day we took it, they had promised 3 hour and several places to go bloody bay Rick's vendor area. We got two hours and basic places for a lot of money. It felt like a scam, the captain scolded us for their error the day before.
We made it fun but I still felt scammed and uneasy. There was several other encounters of rude people but you get the drift.
I was just surprised, I work hard to be kind and respectful to all and did not get the same in return. I was also floored at the time constraints on eating and the bars. I had fun because of the people I was with. But I have been in customer service and most needed lots of work or open the tipping up to maybe improve the attitudes.
We were celebrating our 30th anniversary, as well as my partner's birthday. Barely had time to finish it when the Couples staff said it was time to go.
The 90 minute ride was smooth we didn't stop with a drop off at Couples Negril first, then on to Couples Swept Away. I had requested a first floor room due to a knee issue and that was honored. We arrived at Room , which was a Beachfront Verandah Suite and after getting settled we saw that there were two cupcakes with macarons on top with chocolate writing on the plate saying "Happy 30th Anniversary!
Another set of cupcakes arrived later in the week with the message "Happy Birthday" for my partner. This is the first time we've ever repeated a visit to a resort with the exception of Walt Disney World. The reasons why are evident: Our room was more than adequate for what we needed and our porch: We watched the sunset from our chairs and it was maybe 25 steps to the palapa that we sat under most days. And kitties which I may have encouraged by bringing cat treats from home: This is a laid back, casual resort so if you're looking for marble and glitz and fancy dress every night, perhaps this is not the place for you.
My husband doesn't mind wearing pants one night on vacation, but as he says he wears them every day to work and wants to chill out. The food was great, as were the drinks. We had great beach drink service Cuthbert who was a trainee took great care of us. And the Martini Bar was a must do every night; Olando and Marvin were fun and did a great job of matching us up to cocktails. Sand gravity prevented us from doing much more than floating in the water, sitting on the beach, and reading.
The weather for 3 of our 5 afternoons included rain for about 2 hours but that was fine since we'd already been on the beach for 5 hours at that point. A comment about beach vendors: But it's nice to engage with them; they are just trying to make a living and they all have a story.
I think it adds to the local feel. Hands down this was the best. The staff could not do enough for you and the value for what you pay is outstanding. Nightly entertainment, free water sport activities and the food and drinks where amazing. Already looking to book again. We stayed in a Garden Veranda suite, of which I was initially hesitant given the reviews that claim their proximity to Norman Manley Blvd makes them unusually susceptible to road noise.
I am happy to say that is not the case: The weather for the first week of August was pleasant. Every weather site accessible by man on the internet showed thunderstorms each and every day, but this basically equated to a partly cloudy morning of beautiful beach and surf followed by a 2pm-4pm rain shower. We made the best of it and napped. The restaurants were good. Feathers and Lemon Grass were, of course, of a far higher caliber than the Patio and Palms--but I preferred the latter two.
Feathers and LG take two hours to supply tiny portions. Rube though it may make me, I'd rather pile a gigantic plate up, eat it, and leave without all the pomp and circumstance of putting on a pair of khaki pants to eat dinner in the middle of the tropics. Alcohol was plentiful and, regardless of what any other reviewer will tell you, is watered down. We requested and received a bottle of Smirnoff vodka in our room minibar on day 3. It featured a lovely green sticker on the back labelled "ROOMS," came open with a pouring spout, and was so watered down that I could take shots of it where normally I vomit profusely like a 13 year old boy who has broken into his fathers' liquor cabinet with his friends.
Pretty much any mixed drink at any of the bars is much the same way. To the dedicated alcoholics: I sampled some Glenlivet and Courvossier, both neat, and they were as expected. The beachlife was pretty serene. There are a LOT of people selling marijuana up and down the beach and you have to tell each and every one of them no. We walked down the beach out of the resort to Margaritaville also known as "the cabana with a bar and gift shop" only to be disappointed, but picked up an actual SEALED bottle of Smirnoff on the way back and supplemented our drinks for the rest of the week.
Everyone was very polite and friendly, if a few of them were obviously forced. Room service was impeccable. The cabana grill late night food didn't have anyone staffing it when I showed up twice. Of the 4 jacuzzis, only one was in good working order the entire week we were there. Everyone wants to be tipped for everything, all the time, whether or not you asked for the service and whether or not they deserve it. The porters at MBJ were the worst. But Swept Away is my favorite. No room is more than 50 yards from the beach maybe less.
The grounds of the hotel represent Jamaican tropical paradise./p>

From that point on, their love story unfolded. Their romance blossomed and their family grew and before they knew it, 20 years was knocking at their doorstep. Anthony and Dajuana Mayers are from New Jersey and have three children.
When it was time to celebrate their 20th anniversary, the couple wanted to include all their family and friends. So they did a vow renewal ceremony. But this one is different: People are having sex with each other in the booths. In full view of everyone else in the room. It's Saturday night at the Schvitz in Detroit, and this is couples' night, which really means swingers night, when men and women come to have public sex and sometimes swap partners with others as strangers watch the action.
The air's thick and musty from the steam bath downstairs. Loud moans peal out from a porno flick cranked up in a movie room, mixing with breathing sounds rising from massage booths and unseen areas.
Some couples sip booze at a table to gain courage before joining the group in the big room upstairs, while others sit back to watch the scene unfold. Though it's been notorious over the years for rumors of orgies held here, on most days it's simply a spot for older men who enjoy the Old World tradition of the steam, a place with a rich history long before the lurid stories spread.
Built in , it was the hangout of the notorious Purple Gang, the Detroit-based Jewish mobsters who made a fortune bootlegging alcohol from Canada to Detroit during Prohibition. They were famously violent, blamed for several hundred grisly and very public murders in the city. The bathhouse they adopted was modeled on steam rooms that local immigrants like them had patronized back in Eastern European ghettos. Though there were several smaller bathhouses in this part of the west side, which for a time was a Jewish neighborhood centered on Oakland Avenue, this was the grandest of them.
Now it's the last one left. It began as the Oakland Health Club, back when health clubs consisted of such things as steam baths, liquor and big meals.
He's been taking steams here for nearly a half-century. The roots of its Russian-style steam room go back centuries, back to the days before indoor plumbing. Vayse, 64, came to Detroit from Russia in , and was hired at the bathhouse soon after. A former track and field athlete for the Soviets in St. Petersburg, he's stocky and soft-spoken with a thick Russian accent, and spends his days bustling around the building, taking care of innumerable tasks. The steam room he runs has bleacher-style wood seats along two walls.
The higher the seat, the hotter the heat, which is created by a gas oven holding several tons of superheated rocks taken from the bottom of a river. Steam is made by pouring water on top of them. Within five minutes you start to perspire, and after about seven minutes you feel the oils and the salt come out through the pores, and that lasts you a good 20 minutes, a half-hour. It's a very, very relaxing thing.
Central to the experience is the plaetza , spelled several ways but always consisting of a massage one schvitzer gives another using a bouquet of oak leaves that have been soaked in a bucket of warm water, softening them and causing them to give off a tea-like odor as the recipient is rubbed from head to toe with it.
The steam is followed by its opposite, a jump into a cold-water swimming pool that snaps the pores shut. The Schvitz also has massage tables, a dining area, hot tubs and a movie room with a projector and screen. In the old days it even had sleeping quarters for members who got kicked out of their homes or had to hide from the law.
But you'd never know any of that by looking at the building. The exterior has no signs. Its windows are bricked in with cinderblocks. The whole structure is painted gray. It's drab and boring, as if to avoid drawing curiosity. The front door is always locked, and the only way inside is for someone at the front desk to buzz you in after getting a look at you. It looks like an old-time men's club inside. Several garish, old-fashioned paintings of nude women languishing on satin sheets hang on the dark-wood walls.
